P4M-1Q from VQ-1 was on a patrol mission from Iwakuni, Japan near Wenchow, China, the night of 22 August 1956. It was shot down by hostile aircraft 32 miles off the coast. Wreckage and one body from the 16 man crew were recovered by Dennis J. Buckley (DDR 808).

More detailed report of the same incident.

22 August 1956 While on a patrol mission from Iwakuni Japan, a USN P4M-1Q Mercator of VQ-1 (BuNo 124362) disappeared after a nightime attack by PLAAF pilot Zhongwen Song, 32 miles off the coast of Wenchow China and 180 miles north of Formosa. There were no survivors of the 16 crewmembers. The body of crewman Jack A. Curtis and some wreckage were recovered by the USS Dennis J. Buckley (DDR 808).

P.S. Remember the SAR mission in 1956 when we picked up the downed plane parts and dead pilot ? Well that mission entitles every one on the DJB to the China Service Medal. (also VFW membership).  I received my medal two years ago. I had to send a copy of the ships roster and the article from the cruise book to verify that I was there. The VA office filed all the paper work for me. Maybe your not into medals but I wanted mine. It is hanging on the framed picture of the DJB in my office. Just thought I'd pass that along for anyone interested.
